Loteria
Series |
Loteria is a traditional Mexican card game that is played like bingo but uses pictures instead of numbers. The game was introduced to Mexico in the 18th century and is still popular today. The images from the game cards depict common everyday objects and characters that are easily recognized and significant to the traditions and culture of Mexico and Latin America. I began the series with the idea of updating the game, which I grew up playing in the border city of El Paso, Texas. The images in this series are based on many of the traditional cards along with other everyday imagery. They are playful, disturbing, and humorous. Each print is engraved on copper, hand wiped, hand printed, and lastly, hand colored with watercolors, thus making each print unique. Currently there are 40 images to this series. |
